How do you explain bullfighting to someone who has never stepped foot in a bullring? This book, written in English, achieves just that by giving a voice to those who live it from the inside. Through interviews with top breeders and matadors, as well as their assistants, agents, promoters, tailors, surgeons, bullring staff, journalists, and fans, Muriel Feiner builds a deep and sensitive portrait of The Fiesta, its history, what happens behind the scenes, and the motivations of its protagonists.
The work defends bullfighting as an artistic expression and reviews its influence on painting, literature, music, and cinema, from Goya and Picasso to Lorca and Hemingway. It’s designed for both the aficionado looking to deepen their knowledge and the curious reader approaching this spectacle for the first time.
Its author, born in New York, arrived in Spain in the seventies to finish her studies and ended up marrying bullfighter Pedro Giraldo. A journalist and photographer, she founded the International Bullfighting Club in Madrid, open to men and women of any nationality, at a time when bullfighting clubs didn’t admit women. She has published over a dozen books on bullfighting and has received accolades such as the Medal of Bullfighting Merit from the Royal Spanish Bullfighting Federation and an award from the Parliamentary Bullfighting Association.
An ideal gift for English-speaking fans, foreign visitors, or anyone who truly wants to understand the world of bullfighting.
